Happy First Anniversary to Texas BIG BEER Brewery

texas big beer one year

Call it a birthday, anniversary or commemoration, but whatever you call it, know this: Texas brewers Tammy and John McKissack just celebrated something BIG – the first full year of Texas BIG BEER in business!

We first introduced you to Texas BIG BEER Brewery in October 2012, when Del Papa Distributing announced it’d be carrying Big Texas Blonde, Renaissance Cowboy and Texas Crude throughout its three distribution areas across 17 counties.

But the brewery’s story actually began earlier that year. In May 2012, the first batch of Big Texas Blonde, brewed in a small building deep in the Big Thicket of East Texas, hit area liquor store shelves. Soon after, the brewery debuted their beer on tap (and floated five kegs in the span of a few hours) at Madison’s on Dowlen in Beaumont.

In the last year, Texas BIG BEER has made appearances at several Texas festivals, held their grand opening to a crowd of over 300, introduced a few new brews to their lineup and expanded their distribution area across much of our great state. Along the way, they began brewery tours, garnered local and national media attention, picked up a coveted award – the Best Porter in the Rockies / Southwest at the United States Beer Tasting Championship for their Texas Crude – and most importantly, gained a loyal following all while developing, perfecting and growing their craft beer lineup.

All that makes for a story – and year – worth celebrating. And so, we tip our bottles back to you, Texas BIG BEER, for making the Lone Star State just a little tastier and a little more home-grown.

May your beer stay cold, malty and BIG, Pint Jockeys!

Hello and hearty Texas Tuesday to you, Pint Jockeys!

We’ve got a lot to look forward to this week: Christmas is just six days away and the supposed end of the world (!!!) is three days away. But we might argue the most important event is just TWO days away. That’s right, we’re talking about the December Pint Jockeys tasting events. We hear you; we can’t believe a whole month’s gone by, either. We guess time flies when you’re drinking good beer.

Anyway, this Thursday’s lineup will feature all three Texas BIG BEER Brewery offerings, including Big Texas Blonde (a Belgian ale which we featured in our Texas Tuesday post last week), Renaissance Cowboy (a Scottish Ale which first debuted at the Texas Renaissance Festival) and Texas Crude (a robust porter).

All the tasting events will also serve Magic Hat #9 and Stella Artois, which was originally crafted as a holiday beer.

At the Texas City tasting, Texas BIG BEER founder and brewer John McKissack (also known as Johnny MAX) and brewer Robert Hebert (aka BOB the Brewer) will be on site to talk about the joys and challenges of starting and running a microbrewery. Plus, we’ll be pouring Saint Arnold’s Bishop’s Barrel #1.

In Beaumont, our bonus brew is Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra Pale IPA, which is bold, assertive and full of flavor.

Victoria tasting-goers will enjoy Angry Orchard, a crisp and refreshing cider which offers sweet apple notes and a subtle dryness at the finish for a balanced cider taste.

As always, the tastings are free and open to adults ages 21 and older. Catch us at the tasting location nearest you. We can’t wait to share a beer with you!

Soon it’ll be easier than ever to get your hands on Texas BIG Beer

Hi there, Pint Jockeys!

This Texas Tuesday we’re saying an enthusiastic howdy-do to one of Texas’ newest breweries! That’s right! Just yesterday, Del Papa Distributing officially welcomed Texas BIG Beer to their extensive craft beer portfolio, which means the brews will be making their way into refrigerators across the Gulf Coast  in the very near future. The brewery has made quite a name for itself in and beyond its hometown of Buna, Texas, and we can’t wait to get a taste.

And while we can’t share too much about the flavor just yet, we can share an interesting fact about the brewer. The folks at Texas BIG Beer Brewery note that while their beers are BIG, their carbon footprint is small. Located on what will be five acres of a Self-Sufficient Homestead, their facilities are built, in part, to convert waste into food. Texas BIG Beer Brewery also plans to vent the carbon dioxide produced during fermentation into their greenhouse to allow the plants to convert that CO2 into oxygen. So, consider it your civic duty to pick up a six pack of your Texas BIG Beer favorite; by drinking it, you’re helping the environment.

The exact roll out date is still being confirmed, but expect to see the brewery’s staple Big Texas Blonde and new concoctions, Renaissance Cowboy and Texas Crude, soon! The beers will be distributed throughout Del Papa’s territory, which includes Brazoria, Calhoun, Chambers, Dewitt, Galveston, Hardin, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Lavaca, Liberty, Matagorda, Newton, Orange, Sabine, Victoria and Wharton counties.

Let us know if you’ve had a Texas BIG Beer before and if so, which is your favorite.

‘Til next time, Pint Jockeys!
