Saint Arnold Bishop’s Barrel No. 3

It’s that time again! As loyal Pint Jockeys know, every week we pick out a Texas beer that should be recognized by the craft beer community for just being so darn good. This week we were glad to get our hands on the coveted Saint Arnold Bishop’s Barrel No. 3. The third installment in the small batch, barrel aged series of Saint Arnold beers, No. 3 is as original as its predecessors. No surprise, Saint Arnold Brewing Company is still brewing up a loyal following while honing their elite craft beer.

The brewery tells us No. 3 is a Russian Imperial Stout aged for 12 months in oak bourbon barrels. The oak bourbon nicely complements this beer but be prepared for its taste (and the chocolate kick)  to stand out. It certainly isn’t overpowering and is remarkably easy to drink, but you’ll want to take your time with this sipping beer. In fact, no need to worry about your glass staying ice-cold; No. 3 improves in taste as it warms up. Black/brown in color with mild creaminess and carbonation, this beer gets two Pint Jockeys thumbs up!

If you’ve tried No. 1 and No.2, No.3 is still well worth your time. It is most similar to No. 1 (also an imperial stout) but with a longer aging time and a touch of creaminess. The brew is only available in bars and restaurants in Texas and Louisiana and only a limited amount still remains! Now go get your beer on and tell us what you think about this delectable brew from Saint Arnold. Cheers!

Texas City, Beaumont and Victoria to enjoy selection of new brews and warm-weather favorites

Pint Jockeys logo

This Thursday marks the Third Thursday of April, Pint Jockeys, and you know what that means – it’s tasting time!

The April 18 Pint Jockeys craft beer tastings will take place from 5-7 p.m. at Del Papa’s distribution centers in Victoria, Texas City and Beaumont. All three tasting events will feature the below lineup of spring and summer seasonals, plus a few classics. All tastings are free and open to adults ages 21 and older.

Saint Arnold Divine Reserve 13 – The newest in Saint Arnold’s Divine Reserve series, 13 is a Belgian Quadrupel. The aroma is distinctly Belgian with a hint of fruit, while its simple malt bill allows the caramel and chocolate malts to come through. Large amounts of Belgian Extra Dark Candi Syrup darken the color and impart dark, fruit-like flavors. Its aftertaste is slightly sweet and dry.

• Sixpoint Sweet Action – Part pale ale, part wheat, part cream ale, Sweet Action is a simple representation of what makes beer great: the marriage of barley and hops. The barley malt will coat your tongue like honey while the hops brush your palate clean with every sip.

• Southern Star Bombshell Blonde – The American blonde ale has a rich, creamy golden color with flavors of yeasty bread coupled with a touch of hops. Now available in 16 oz. cans, this fan favorite is fermented at a cool temperature to give it a clean finish.

Rahr and Sons Bucking Bock – This award-winning beer is a traditional German Spring Bock, golden in color and mildly hopped. It has a smooth malty character at 7.5% ABV.

Saint Arnold Summer Pils – Summer Pils is a true bohemian-style pilsner brewed with fine German malt and a copious quantity of noble hops imported from the Czech Republic. Its delicate, sweet malt taste is complemented by an abundant hop aroma and flavor.

All about Saint Arnold’s newest release, Icon BlueAn Iconic Texas Tuesday

icon blue

Raise your bottles, Pint Jockeys! You’ve nearly made it to the half-way mark of the week. How’s everyone doing?

We’d say we’re pretty swell, given that the second release in Saint Arnold’s Icon series is out and ready for the pickin’. Though this feeling is nothing new; every time the Saint Arnold folks release something new, we get excited.

Different from its predecessor (Icon Red), Icon Blue is a Cascadian Dark Ale, also known as a Black IPA. According to the fine folks at Saint Arnold, “it has a big hop nose and flavor with a great roast finish, yet a light body.” It’s now available in four packs and on tap for up to three months, or until it’s gone, so get it while the getting’s good.

And “get” this. Icon Blue is a derivative of Pete Garza’s winning entry of Saint Arnold’s 2012 Big Batch Brew Bash homebrew competition. We think congratulations are in order to Pete Garza!

One Facebook commenter mentioned Icon Blue is great on tap. Have you tried it yet? Let us know where and what you think in the comments below.

Until next time, cheers, Pint Jockeys!

bishops barrel 2And now, a quick bit about Saint Arnold’s newly-released Bishop’s Barrel No. 2: It’s an old ale, aged in Chardonnay barrels with cherries for 14 months. The nose is a combination of sour cherry, oaked chardonnay and a wild yeast character. The taste has cherry and light malt up front, chardonnay in the middle and finishes dry with a distinct tartness. The cherry throughout is a light note, never dominating.

“BB2” is only available in bars and restaurants, so pay an extra visit your favorite stomping grounds this week. We’ll be posting BB2 sightings on our Facebook page, and you can also search the hashtag #bb2 on Twitter.

‘Til Thursday, cheers!

“Laissez les bons temps rouler” with Saint Arnold Spring Bock

saint arnold bock

Unfortunately, it’s almost time to hang up our beads and put away our jester hats – Mardi Gras! Galveston 2013 is coming to a close. But not before a fun and festive Fat Tuesday celebration down on the Island. At 6:30 tonight, come meet us as we watch the Krewe of Aquarius Parade revel alongside the Krewes of Gambrinus, Babalu, Thalasar, Baccus and Z Krewe!

As all good things must come to an end, tomorrow we’ll return to our normal lives, void of nightly parades, balcony parties and phenomenal live music. That’s ok, though, because Spring is on the horizon and that means we’ve got some exceptional seasonals and new brews to look forward to, like Saint Arnold Spring Bock.

Saint Arnold’s refers to Spring Bock as the “laziest” of its brews because it takes eight weeks to ferment and age.  It’s an authentic German-style Bock with a malty, slightly sweet taste. In line with German tradition, the beer is brewed to a high starting gravity, resulting in higher alcohol content – 6.4% ABV. Serve Spring Bock at about 40 degrees along with roasted chicken or grilled game for an enjoyable spring time cookout.

And speaking of Saint Arnold, next Monday the brewery releases its much-anticipated Bishop’s Barrel No. 2, a funky, old-age ale. We can’t wait!

Check back on Tuesday for a full post on this new release, and until next time, cheers, Pint Jockeys!

Hello and hearty Texas Tuesday to you, Pint Jockeys!

tx big beer logo

We’ve got a lot to look forward to this week: Christmas is just six days away and the supposed end of the world (!!!) is three days away. But we might argue the most important event is just TWO days away. That’s right, we’re talking about the December Pint Jockeys tasting events. We hear you; we can’t believe a whole month’s gone by, either. We guess time flies when you’re drinking good beer.

Anyway, this Thursday’s lineup will feature all three Texas BIG BEER Brewery offerings, including Big Texas Blonde (a Belgian ale which we featured in our Texas Tuesday post last week), Renaissance Cowboy (a Scottish Ale which first debuted at the Texas Renaissance Festival) and Texas Crude (a robust porter).

All the tasting events will also serve Magic Hat #9 and Stella Artois, which was originally crafted as a holiday beer.

At the Texas City tasting, Texas BIG BEER founder and brewer John McKissack (also known as Johnny MAX) and brewer Robert Hebert (aka BOB the Brewer) will be on site to talk about the joys and challenges of starting and running a microbrewery. Plus, we’ll be pouring Saint Arnold’s Bishop’s Barrel #1.

In Beaumont, our bonus brew is Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra Pale IPA, which is bold, assertive and full of flavor.

Victoria tasting-goers will enjoy Angry Orchard, a crisp and refreshing cider which offers sweet apple notes and a subtle dryness at the finish for a balanced cider taste.

As always, the tastings are free and open to adults ages 21 and older. Catch us at the tasting location nearest you. We can’t wait to share a beer with you!
