With the national day of love quickly approaching, we interrupt our traditional Texas Tuesday programming to bring you a few brew recommendations that are sure to impress your craft beer-loving sweetie on V-day. (And for the singles who’d rather call it “D-day” – we promise, these beers taste just as good with five of your closest friends at the local pub as they do on a date at a fancy restaurant. You have our word.)

Chocolate has long been a traditional Valentine’s Day gift. Sugary-sweet and usually packaged in some sort of heart-shaped box, it is a go-to for the fella or lady who’s not looking to mess with success by saying “I love you” with a gift that’s tried and true.

To this guy or gal, may we offer another an equally equitable formula: chocolate + beer.

Rogue Ales’ Chocolate Stout is sure to please, with mellow flavors of oats, chocolate malts and real chocolate, all balanced perfectly with just the right amount of hops for a bitter-sweet finish. This ebony-hued beer has a rich, creamy head, making for a picture-perfect presentation.

Rogue Chocolate Stout

Want to spice things up with even more chocolate intensity? Rogue Ales has you covered with their Double Chocolate Stout, flavored with even more imported Dutch bittersweet chocolate. No need to get nervous about making the right impression with this one – it won a Gold Medal at the World Beer Championships in 2010.

The folks at Texas Big Beer Brewery are also helping you celebrate this special day with their White Chocolate Porter.

Texas BIG Beer Brewery white chocolate ale

This rich, dark ale pours almost black with a nice tan head. You’ll notice coffee on the nose, while white chocolate flavors come out gradually as you sip, followed by a pleasing, hoppy-bitter finish.  Serve some up for your sweetie and get ready for some compliments – this one is sure to be a favorite even past Valentine’s Day.

If you’re looking to keep things “light”, we suggest pairing Goose Island’s Gillian, a Belgian style farmhouse ale, with your lover’s feast.  Inspired by an amuse bouche often prepared by the wife of one of Goose Island’s brewery, Gillian brings white pepper, strawberry and honey to a harmonious blend. Partially aged in wine barrels, this brew is slightly tart and pleasantly sweet with a refreshingly effervescent body.

And finally, for those looking to mark the occasion with a most-refined ale, may we suggest Stella Artois.

Stella Artois

Stella Artois is one of the world’s best-selling beers and is enjoyed in more than 80 countries. Its full, characteristic flavor and high quality is assured through a superior brewing process and by using the finest ingredients available. When only the best of the best will do for your boo – this is your go-to.

Good luck with your Valentine’s Day planning, Pint Jockeys! Three cheers for three things that make our world go round – love, chocolate and craft beer.

We’ll see you back on the blog next week (after all this lovey-dovey stuff has passed) with another Texas Tuesday pick.

Hey there, Pint Jockeys! Tasting week is finally here and today we’re posting the lineups at all three tastings. We’re also revealing details on a special guest scheduled to appear at our Beaumont event and letting you know how you can participate in our GI Joe/GI Jane donation drive for our armed forces overseas. Oh, and did we mention that we’re giving away FREE tickets to the upcoming Dickens on the Strand Festival at our Beaumont and Texas City tastings? We can assure you, this is not all too good to be true!

Let’s dive right into it with the big reveal: Rahr & Sons founder Fritz Rahr will be on-hand at this Thursday’s Beaumont tasting!

Rahr & Sons logo

Event-goers will sample a lineup of seven different beers from the Rahr & Sons Brewing Company portfolio and have the chance to meet and interact with Mr. Rahr. Each event-goer will also receive one free Friday night ticket to the upcoming Dickens on the Strand Festival (December 6-8) in Galveston, generously provided by the Galveston Historical Foundation. Tasters can join Fritz at Logon Café after the tasting to keep the fun going with a cask of Stormcloud IPA and Texas Red and Ugly Pug on draft. Here’s your tasting lineup, Beaumont:

Blonde – Rahr’s Blonde Lager was the first beer to come out of Rahr & Sons Brewing Company. It is a medium-bodied traditional Munich Helles-style pale lager that features a rounded maltiness without being too heavy. And like every proud Texan, it has a good head and is pleasant – but not overly sweet.

Texas Red – Texas Red has a well-balanced flavor. The notes of caramel and its sound malt character are perfectly balanced with just a bit of hops. This is a super-smooth, very drinkable beer.

La Grange – La Grange is a sturdy, complex farmhouse ale with a myriad of esters ranging from fruit-like aromas to earthy yeast tones. It is dry and refreshing, perfect for quenching your thirst after a long day.

Angry Goat – Angry Goat pours a cloudy, dark, ruddy brown hue that some describe as a murky tea color. Expect aromas of banana, clove, dark fruits and a hint of roasted grain. Tastes include a big wave of molasses and dark brown sugar, giving the brew a defining richness, while a pinch of cocoa adds a layer of sweet complexity. Tastes end on a spicy note with a touch of warming and comforting creaminess.

Stormcloud – During a fierce storm on his voyage across the ocean, William Rahr could be heard yelling from the tall-masted ship: “Roll on old sea! And when you are done, when the storm clouds have destroyed themselves, we will still be standing and drinking!” Rahr & Sons has created the ultimate ale for a voyage such as this: A German-Style IPA – a traditional India Pale Ale with German Influence.

Winter Warmer – This seasonal release is sure to melt even the coldest of hearts. Pouring a dark, almost opaque brown, this beer is packed with roasted malts and bold flavors. Tasters will pick up on a fair amount of English hops and scents of dark stone fruits and light smoke. With a pleasantly mild carbonation, this is one full-bodied brew you can sip on all night at your next holiday party.

Ugly Pug – Unlike most dark beers that are often described as “heavy” or “chewy”, Rahr’s Ugly Pug has a surprisingly light body. Sometimes referred to as “nirvana in a bottle”, it combines their three amazing flavors: coffee, hints of chocolate, and of course BEER!

Our Victoria and Beaumont tasters can expect a STACKED lineup as well. Attendees will sample six different beers from some of the biggest names in the business including Saint Arnold Brewing Company, Karbach Brewing Company, Stella Artois and Goose Island.

As an added bonus, our Texas City tasting-goers will receive one free Friday night ticket to the upcoming Dickens on the Strand Festival in Galveston (December 6-8), generously provided by the Galveston Historical Foundation. Check out the deets on each brew below:

Saint Arnold Icon Red – Saint Arnold adds a Bohemian Pils to their “Icon” series with Icon Red. This beer starts with the distinctive Saaz hop nose, then a pleasant maltiness for such a light beer followed by a floral, spicy and earthy hop flavor that closes with a focused bitter finish.

Saint Arnold Sailing Santa – Sailing Santa was born when Saint Arnold fans requested that they blend half a pint of Elissa IPA with half a pint of Christmas Ale. Saint Arnold took note, and after a few slight tweaks introduced this seasonal ale. The result is a spiced beer that is great to drink alone or with your favorite holiday foods.

Saint Arnold Elissa – A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Saint Arnold’s reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it.

Karbach Yule Shoot Your Eye Out – This seasonal, “Winter Warmer” style beer is loaded with specialty malts, fresh ginger, cocoa nibs, orange peel and other holiday spices. Only brewed in limited quantities, you’ll want to put this at the very top of your wish list to Santa this year.

Stella Artois – Stella Artois is part of a Belgian brewing tradition dating back to 1366. It is the number one Belgian beer in the world and is present in over 80 countries. Defined as a bottom filtered, blonde pilsner, it is thirst quenching with a malty middle and crisp finish delivering a full flavor and a hint of bitterness. Stella Artois is best enjoyed served between 3 and 5 degree Celsius and should be served in the unique Stella Artois Chalice.

Goose Island Sixth Day Festive Brown Ale – Malty, rich and warming, this festive Brown Ale from Goose Island is sure to keep you feeling cozy even on the coldest of winter days. It pours a dark mahogany brown with a tinted cream and smells like sweet toasty malt and a hint of molasses and sugar. This ale is full-bodied and dense with a clean finish packed with smoky malts.

Sixpoint Sweet Action – Ah, love is bitter and sweet. This beer is signature Sixpoint – hard to define, but perhaps that’s why people love it so much. Part pale ale, part wheat and part cream ale – all Sweet Action.

Sixpoint Sweet Action

Southern Star Walloon – A Belgian-style Grisette, this hazy colored brew’s aroma is filled with hints of unripe banana, citrusy notes and orange zest. It’s taste is persimmon-like with some mango characteristics and a hint of banana. Walloon has a nice grain/wheat profile that tangles with the yeast to create a soft sweetness and medium mouthfeel.

Rouge Hazlenut Brown – Rogue Ale’s Hazlenut Brown is a nutty twist on traditional European Brown ale. Dark brown in color with a hazelnut aroma, this brew has a rich, nutty flavor and smooth malty finish.

Saint Arnold Oktoberfest – A Saint Arnold classic, this full bodied, malty and slightly sweet beer is perfect for celebrating the autumn harvest. With its round malt flavor, it will have you pining away for the crisper, cooler temperatures that await in the coming months.

Saint Arnold Oktoberfest

Saint Arnold Icon Gold – This “Biére de Saison” has a complex, spicy nose with notes of brown sugar and plums. The taste starts with big spicy malt and alcohol and then turns fruity and slightly sweet in the middle. It’s earthy, spicy finish makes the brew both highly complex and highly delicious.

Hello and hearty Texas Tuesday to you, Pint Jockeys!

tx big beer logo

We’ve got a lot to look forward to this week: Christmas is just six days away and the supposed end of the world (!!!) is three days away. But we might argue the most important event is just TWO days away. That’s right, we’re talking about the December Pint Jockeys tasting events. We hear you; we can’t believe a whole month’s gone by, either. We guess time flies when you’re drinking good beer.

Anyway, this Thursday’s lineup will feature all three Texas BIG BEER Brewery offerings, including Big Texas Blonde (a Belgian ale which we featured in our Texas Tuesday post last week), Renaissance Cowboy (a Scottish Ale which first debuted at the Texas Renaissance Festival) and Texas Crude (a robust porter).

All the tasting events will also serve Magic Hat #9 and Stella Artois, which was originally crafted as a holiday beer.

At the Texas City tasting, Texas BIG BEER founder and brewer John McKissack (also known as Johnny MAX) and brewer Robert Hebert (aka BOB the Brewer) will be on site to talk about the joys and challenges of starting and running a microbrewery. Plus, we’ll be pouring Saint Arnold’s Bishop’s Barrel #1.

In Beaumont, our bonus brew is Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra Pale IPA, which is bold, assertive and full of flavor.

Victoria tasting-goers will enjoy Angry Orchard, a crisp and refreshing cider which offers sweet apple notes and a subtle dryness at the finish for a balanced cider taste.

As always, the tastings are free and open to adults ages 21 and older. Catch us at the tasting location nearest you. We can’t wait to share a beer with you!

Stella Artois Also available in bomber bottles!

‘Tis the season to enjoy festive brews! We’ve already given you a pretty thorough run down of our favorite holiday offerings, but we’ve saved the original Christmas Beer for last. In honor of the holidays, today’s post will feature Stella Artois.

This brew originated in Leuven, Belgian as a seasonal ale celebrating Christmas. However, the delicious pale lager was so popular that it quickly became a year-round favorite. Brewed from the finest ingredients available, today the full-flavored, high-quality brew is enjoyed in more than 80 countries around the globe.

Although it is not technically a Christmas seasonal, Stella Artois continues to honor its roots. In fact, for the 2011 holiday season, the brewer put together “Under the Holiday Star,” a free holiday jazz album for visitors to download. Check it out here!

Whether you plan to serve the beer in a signature Chalice, new chalice can, 12 ounce bottle or our favorite – the bomber bottle, Stella Artois is perfect for any holiday celebration. Just turn up the jazz and enjoy the season with friends, family and delicious brew.

Sample Stocking-Ready Brews just in time for the Holidays!

Who’s ready for the Pint Jockey’s holiday tasting event? As always, we’ll be hosting a free monthly event for beer lovers 21 years of age and older at the Del Papa Distributing Centers located in Galveston, Victoria and Beaumont, Texas.  The December tasting is confirmed and set to take place TOMORROW, December 14 from 5-7p.m.

For the final tasting of 2011, we’re helping you select a few stocking-ready brews for your favorite host, foodie or beer lover. With six unique varieties perfect for the cool, winter temperatures,  we hope you’ll get a taste of something you like!

The December tasting event will feature:

  • Stella Artois – This brew was originally brewed as a Christmas beer, but after tremendous success, it quickly became a year-round favorite.  Stella Artois is one of the world’s best-selling Belgian pale lagers and is enjoyed in more than 80 countries. Its full, characteristic flavor and high quality is assured through a superior brewing process by using the finest ingredients available.

  • Rahr & Son’s To Thee Angry Goat– This bold Weizen Doppelbock is the Fort Worth brewery’s latest fall edition to their “To Thee” Series. Traditionally, an ordinance in Germany reserved this style of beer for the sole enjoyment of the royal family. Luckily, today we can all enjoy the complex brew, which features pronounced dark malt flavors complimented by hints of banana and clove.

  • Leffe – This Belgian Blonde Ale is a rich, golden Abbey ale with spicy aromas of clove and vanilla, smoky caramel and roasted notes. The taste is sweet and silky, slightly drying with a well-balanced bitterness and a long, lingering herbal flavor.

  • Pyramid Snowcap Winter Warmer – Deep mahogany in color, Pyramid Brewing Company’s full-bodied Winter Warmer is brewed in the spirit of British winter ales. Crafted with a flurry of roasted chocolate and caramel malts, and generously hopped with Nugget, Willamette and East Kent Goldings, it delivers a smooth finish that makes this beer the perfect cold weather companion.

  • Magic Hat Winter Howl – Magic Hat Brewing Company’s black-as-night winter lager has dark, roasted malts with hints of chocolate and coffee.  This deeply dark and satisfying elixir consists of a light-to-medium body that is perfect for late-night sessions and a delicious pour.

  • Saint Arnold Winter Stout– Saint Arnold Brewing Company’s creamy, full bodied, sweet stout has subtle chocolate and coffee flavors and a well-balanced soft roastiness. Saint Arnold Winter Stout is loosely filtered to preserve a rich mouthfeel which is particularly satisfying during the colder months.

For more on the event locations and times, check out our event listing on Facebook and be sure to RSVP! We want to be sure there’s enough brew to keep all of our fellow beer fans nice and toasty!

See you there!
