Archive for the ‘Icon Series’ Category

What are you thankful for this year? As Thanksgiving approaches and you find yourself reflecting on all of life’s many gifts, allow us to suggest one more to add to your list: Saint Arnold Icon Red.

Saint Arnold Icon Red

Released only yesterday, November 11th, this Bohemian Pils joins the prestigious Saint Arnold Icon series, an exclusive series of beers only released for about three months at a time. Some will of these beers are iconic of a beer style (which was the original concept), while some demonstrate more creative interpretations or melding of beer styles, from recipes conceived and refined by Saint Arnold brewers.

When crafting this brew, the folks at Saint Arnold were inspired by hop buying trips to the Czech Republic. They aimed to create something similar to the unfiltered, unpasteurized pilsners common to the region, but with a higher emphasis on flavor and aromatic hops.

This beer starts with a distinctive Saaz hop nose, moving to a pleasant maltiness followed by a floral, spicy and earthy hop flavor that wraps up with a bitter finish. Made with only one malt (pils) and one hop (Saaz), this is a deceptively simple, light and refreshing beer. The Saaz hops speak to the beer’s simple and pure nature, dating back to the earliest days of brewing. In fact, they’re the only hop used in brewing that has never been hybridized.

Most of the maltiness in Icon Red comes from the “decoction mash” – a rare, traditional method used for heating the mash in which a portion of the mash is removed, boiled, and then mixed back in. All this boiling causes caramelization, which gives the beer its deep color and rich body.

This beer is best enjoyed at 40° to 55°F and is on shelves NOW! What are you waiting for, Pint Jockeys? Check it out today and let us know what you think. Share where you found it with other Pint Jockeys on our Facebook page.

Until we meet again, cheers to you and cheers to another “iconic” Saint Arnold beer!

Sixpoint Sweet Action – Ah, love is bitter and sweet. This beer is signature Sixpoint – hard to define, but perhaps that’s why people love it so much. Part pale ale, part wheat and part cream ale – all Sweet Action.

Sixpoint Sweet Action

Southern Star Walloon – A Belgian-style Grisette, this hazy colored brew’s aroma is filled with hints of unripe banana, citrusy notes and orange zest. It’s taste is persimmon-like with some mango characteristics and a hint of banana. Walloon has a nice grain/wheat profile that tangles with the yeast to create a soft sweetness and medium mouthfeel.

Rouge Hazlenut Brown – Rogue Ale’s Hazlenut Brown is a nutty twist on traditional European Brown ale. Dark brown in color with a hazelnut aroma, this brew has a rich, nutty flavor and smooth malty finish.

Saint Arnold Oktoberfest – A Saint Arnold classic, this full bodied, malty and slightly sweet beer is perfect for celebrating the autumn harvest. With its round malt flavor, it will have you pining away for the crisper, cooler temperatures that await in the coming months.

Saint Arnold Icon Gold – This “Biére de Saison” has a complex, spicy nose with notes of brown sugar and plums. The taste starts with big spicy malt and alcohol and then turns fruity and slightly sweet in the middle. It’s earthy, spicy finish makes the brew both highly complex and highly delicious.

All about Saint Arnold’s newest release, Icon BlueAn Iconic Texas Tuesday

Raise your bottles, Pint Jockeys! You’ve nearly made it to the half-way mark of the week. How’s everyone doing?

We’d say we’re pretty swell, given that the second release in Saint Arnold’s Icon series is out and ready for the pickin’. Though this feeling is nothing new; every time the Saint Arnold folks release something new, we get excited.

Different from its predecessor (Icon Red), Icon Blue is a Cascadian Dark Ale, also known as a Black IPA. According to the fine folks at Saint Arnold, “it has a big hop nose and flavor with a great roast finish, yet a light body.” It’s now available in four packs and on tap for up to three months, or until it’s gone, so get it while the getting’s good.

And “get” this. Icon Blue is a derivative of Pete Garza’s winning entry of Saint Arnold’s 2012 Big Batch Brew Bash homebrew competition. We think congratulations are in order to Pete Garza!

One Facebook commenter mentioned Icon Blue is great on tap. Have you tried it yet? Let us know where and what you think in the comments below.

Until next time, cheers, Pint Jockeys!
