Texas BIG Beer Czar of Texas

There’s a new king craft brew in town and it goes by the name of “Czar of Texas.”

This Queen’s Limited Release from the folks at Texas BIG Beer Brewery in Buna is out on shelves now and we recommend that you pick some up before it’s as good as gone because we’re telling ya – it lives up to its royal name.

A Russian Imperial Stout, this ale pours an opaque brown-black with a heavy, cinnamon-brown head. The beer is extremely well balanced and in true Imperial Stout fashion, is packed with intensely malty, deeply roasted and fruity flavors. With the perfect level of intensity on the tongue, Czar packs both smoky and savory elements including baking chocolate, dried fruit and vanilla with a restrained sweetness that leads to a long and dry finish. The strong nose incorporates decadent notes of molasses, fig, spice, black tea, vanilla and wood, adding to the luxurious sensory experience for the drinker.

Looking for a beer to impress your fellow New Year’s Eve revelers tonight? This is it. Want to enjoy something new tomorrow as you kick off 2014? This is just the stuff to do it with.

Cheers to a great year full of great craft beer, Pint Jockeys! We’ll see you back next Tuesday with our first Texas Tuesday pick of 2014.

This month, we’re bringing you a great mix of old and new holiday classics

Where has the time gone? Can you believe we’re about to host our FINAL tasting of 2013? It’s been an awesome year – we’ve gotten to sample the gamut and hang out with the regulars and have met lots of new friends.

This Thursday, December 19th, all in attendance will sample a lineup of seasonal picks and year-round favorites from top brands including Saint Arnold Brewing Company, Southern Star Brewing, Shock Top and Magners. We’re positive that the roster will leave everyone feeling ready for a weekend of fun holiday celebrations ahead.

And now what you’ve been waiting for – the lineup:

Saint Arnold Winter Stout – A creamy, full bodied sweet stout with subtle chocolate and coffee flavors and a well- balanced soft roastiness, Saint Arnold Winter Stout is loosely filtered to preserve a rich mouthfeel which is particularly satisfying during the colder months.

Saint Arnold Winter Stout

Saint Arnold Icon Red – Saint Arnold adds a Bohemian Pils to their “Icon” series with Icon Red. This beer starts with the distinctive Saaz hop nose, then a pleasant maltiness for such a light beer followed by a floral, spicy and earthy hop flavor that closes with a focused bitter finish.

Saint Arnold Icon Red six pack

Southern Star Valkyrie – A pungently hoppy deep copper ale, this double IPA boasts Simcoe and Centennial hop additions that give it an aroma of marmalade jam and tangerine zest. On the palate this beer is dry, but contains enough malt character to balance the dominant flavors of ripe grapefruit and candied citrus, finishing with a slight spiciness from the Columbus hops.

Southern Star Valkyrie

Shock Top Chocolate Wheat – Shock Top’s newest winter seasonal is a flavorful, unfiltered wheat beer brewed with a blend of chocolate, caramel and black malts then aged with vanilla and cocoa beans.

Shock Top Chocolate Wheat

Shock Top Belgian White – A light, unfiltered, spiced Belgian-style Wheat Ale beer, with a cloudy light golden color, aromas of citrus zest and coriander. Slightly fruity and sweet, finished with a balanced bitterness. As a special treat, try a Black and Tan with the Shock Top Chocolate Wheat!

Shock Top Belgian White

Magners Irish Cider – A premium, traditional brand of Irish cider, Magners takes a blend of seventeen varieties of fresh apples to create a most unique taste. Patiently matured in vats close to the orchards of the Tipperary countryside, Magners has a crisp, refreshing flavor and a natural authentic character. This is the perfect winter-time treat to leave you feeling cozy yet refreshed!

Karbach Fra-Gee-Lay

So first things first, Pint Jockeys… Who gets the “Fra-Gee-Lay” reference from A Christmas Story? We thought you might.

The great minds at Karbach are at it again, helping you keep the good times going this holiday season with their fantastic Fra-Gee-Lay brew.

The side of each bottle reads as follows:

The old man sure had it rough that year. Those damn dogs ate the Turkey, the boiler kept acting up, I got in trouble for beating up the neighborhood bully and to top it all off mom broke the one gift he was so excited to get. Too bad he didn’t have Fra-Gee-Lay back then. It’s the bourbon-barrel aged version of Karbach’s Yule Shoot Your Eye Out. Rich and spicy, with vanilla and chocolate notes, it’s the perfect beer for the most festive holiday occasion or just unwinding with someone special on a winter’s night. Well, anyway, it’s an amazing beer and now I gotta go put a bike together or something.

Happy Holidays -R

Like we said – clever, those Karbach folks.

Have you seen it on shelves or tried it yet? If not, track some down today because we hear it won’t last long… it’s that good, and only available in 22 oz. and on draught in extremely limited supply.

Cheers to Karbach for gifting us with another great winter seasonal this year and of course, cheers to YOU, Pint Jockeys! May your days be filled with holiday cheer and Texas craft beer. See you next week!

Galveston’s biggest and most beloved holiday event will feature five Saint Arnold favorites

It’s the MOST wonderful time of the year, indeed. Saint Arnold Brewing Co. is sponsoring this weekend’s Dickens on the Strand festival in conjunction with the Galveston Historical Foundation, bringing five of its best brews down to the island for your enjoyment.Dickens 1

Have you ever been to the festival? If so, we know you’ve marked your calendar to attend once again. If not, you seriously need to see this! This world-famous holiday event, nowin its 40th year, transforms downtown Galveston into 19th century London at Christmastime. Sights to be seen include parades, non-stop entertainment on five stages, strolling carolers, roving musicians, bagpipers, jugglers and a host of other entertainers. Costumed vendors will peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden with holiday food and drink, Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations and gift items… and of course, FIVE different Saint Arnold brews will be available to help celebrate the season.

Saint Arnold Founder Brock Wagner recently told us why the brewery chose to participate in the festival for the first time ever: “When we started Saint Arnold we had two goals: brew great beer and create an institution the region would be proud of. As such, we love supporting other institutions in the region like the Galveston Historical Foundation,” he said. “We’re excited to participate in GHF’s Dickens on the Strand because it has a great history and it seems natural for us to be involved.”

We’ll see you there, Pint Jockeys! Cheers to a great holiday festival and great Texas craft beer!

Dickens on the Strand – Saint Arnold lineup:

  • Amber – This is a well-balanced, full-flavored amber ale. It has a rich, malty body with a pleasant caramel character derived from a specialty Caravienne malt. Its light fruitiness, characteristic of ales, is derived from a proprietary yeast strain.

  • Christmas Ale – This rich, hearty ale is perfect for the holiday season, with a malty sweetness and spicy hop character. It pairs well with many of your favorite holiday eats including fruit cake, Christmas pudding and squash bisque.

  • Elissa – A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Saint Arnold’s reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it.

  • Lawnmower – This beer is crisp and refreshing, with a sweet, malty body balanced by a complex citrus hop character. The brew is light enough to be enjoyed by Texans after even the most strenuous of activities, like mowing the lawn.

  • Santo – Saint Arnold considers Santo a “black Kölsch.” Brewed using a Kölsch recipe with the addition of Munich and black malts, it is both light bodied and floral with a distinct malt flavor.
