Rahr and Sons Ugly Pug is a Black Beauty

Feeling the heat Pint Jockeys? Welcome to your first Texas Tuesday of the official summer season!

There are plenty of leisurely ways to celebrate summer rolling in: longer days, lake trips, lounging by the pool and our personal favorite, lagers by the pint. Which brings us to our first summertime Texas Tuesday pick: Rahr and Son’s Ugly Pug.

Rahr and Sons Ugly Pug

Known as a “Schwarzbier” or black lager, Ugly Pug is a dark beer with a surprising light body. Though most Schwarzbiers are usually described as “heavy” or “chewy,” Rahr’s Ugly Pug is easy to drink even on the hottest of Texas summer days. Often referred to by its most fervent fans as “nirvana in a bottle” it combines three perennial favorite flavors: coffee, hints of chocolate and of course BEER!

Pick a park and pack a picnic basket with a few dimpled mugs, a six-pack of Ugly Pug, and your favorite fried chicken and you’re set for the perfect summer Saturday afternoon.  When you’re stocking your fridge for next week’s Fourth of July festivities, keep in mind this lager also pairs well with BBQ, roast beef, brats and cheeses like Muenster and Gouda. It’s sure to be a BIG hit with all your fellow revelers, whether hardcore black lager enthusiasts or Schwarzbier newbies.

Don’t take our word for it – Ugly Pug is the recipient of numerous awards including a Silver Medal at the 2009 US Open Beer Championship, the Bronze Medal at the 2009 North American Beer Awards and the Best of the Southwest/Rockies award at the 2006 United States Beer Tasting Championships.

We raise a pint to Rahr and Sons for creating this outstanding lager that’s anything but ugly. Cheers, Pint Jockeys!

Cheers to summer and cheers to another Pint Jockeys craft beer tasting!

This June, Texas City and Victoria locations will dive in to core beer lineup from Houston’s Karbach Brewery Company. Special guest, Karbach Brewmaster Eric Warner, will join the fun at the Texas City tasting and lead the after party to a Karbach tap take-over and Pint Night at Beerfoot Beach Bar in Galveston. All tastings are free and open to adults ages 21 and older.

TEXAS CITY and VICTORIA June tasting event will feature:

  •  Karbach Weisse Versa Wheat Ale – This hybrid wheat beer is a combination of Hefeweizen yeast and spices common to Belgian style white beers. The result is a complex but refreshing wheat beer with flavors and aromas of citrus peel, coriander, banana and wheat. WeisseCan2
  • Karbach Love Street Summer Seasonal – A Kölsch style beer brewed with German hops including Tettnang, Spalt, Saphir and Hallertauer. The golden colored beer has a predominately grassy flavor with other notes of grapefruit, orange, lemon and coriander. Love_Street_Tap_Sticker[3]
  • Karbach Sympathy for the Lager – This lager is prepared with extras steps and time, similar to many brewing processes in Czechoslovakia, to create a lager that is crisp and refreshing. Karbach utilizes a process called floatation, giving a delicate bitterness, before the beer is cold-aged for several weeks. The German hops give a floral, spicy aroma and the Vienna malts produce an amber color and malt sweetness.SympathyCan
  • Karbach Hopadillo IPA – Referred to as “Texas Style IPA” by brewmaster Eric Warner, this unique ale combines American, German and English hops to give a big and bold hop aroma with citrus character and earthy spiciness. HopadilloCan
  • Karbach Rodeo Clown Double IPA – Rodeo Clown doubles down with a malty richness and strong hop character, typical of a DIPA. The aromas are malty with citrus, spice and floral hop characteristics. RodeoCan
  • Karbach El Hopadillo Negro – An American black ale, with a smooth hop taste and a cool, dry finish. Flavors of citrus, pine and roasted malt lace the brew. hopnegro
  • Karbach Roshambo – A Belgian style IPA, with floral, fruity flavors combined with Belgian yeast and a spicy kick. Made with pale, munich crystal and chocolate malts, the beer pours a golden orange color and is well-carbonated.

Beaumont will enjoy Sierra Nevada Summerfest, Rahr & Sons Texas Red, Saint Arnold Icon Green, Rogue Dad’s Little Helper, Southern Star Valkyrie and Stella Artois Cidre. Don’t fret Beaumont, you guys get to sample Karbach and visit with Brewmaster Eric Warner in July!

The second fastest-growing brewery in Texas just keeps getting bigger!

Houston-based Karbach Brewing Company has made a splash in the local craft beer scene in the past year and now the little-brewery-that-could is gaining media attention all over the country. Del Papa Distributing Company announced today that residents in Texas City, Beaumont and Victoria distribution areas will now be able to find the popular beers at their favorite bars and grocery, liquor and convenience stores.

If you’ve kicked back with a cold Karbach, you know brew master Eric Warner must be doing something right in the brew house. We love sipping on this beer, most recently the Love Street Summer Seasonal.  After recently being named the second fastest-growing brewery in the country by The New Yorker, Karbach is certainly a brewery to watch in the coming months.

Karbach’s core lineup, Sympathy for the Lager, Weisse Versa Wheat, Hopadillo IPA and Rodeo Clown DIPA, plus its summer seasonal, Love Street Summer Ale, are among the full lineup available in cans and on tap, now being distributed by Del Papa. Roshambo and El Hopadillo Negro will also be available in 22 oz. bottles and on draught. Del Papa will also distribute the brewery’s seasonal lineup, limited releases and F.U.N. series.

So if you grab a glass or pick up a six-pack, tell us what it is and what ya’ think. Until next time, cheers!

Pint Jockeys Pick of the Week: Karbach Love Street Summer Seasonal

Hello again, Pint Jockeys and Happy June! Let’s get right on to it, shall we? We have a Texas Tuesday Pick of the Week that is all about summertime: Karbach Love Street Summer Seasonal. From May through August, our Houston neighbors at Karbach Brewing Company roll out the Kölsch style beer that makes our mouth water in the groovy looking can. This summer brew hits the market as we are taking our last sips of the spring favorite, Barn Burner Saison. If you enjoyed the saison, we think you’ll have no problem kicking back with the kölsch.

If you’re prone to enjoy Love Street from tap, you’ll be pleased to find this beer has a clear, golden color with a clean, white head that cools you down at first sight. The brewery uses German hops (Tettnang, Spalt, Saphir, Hallertauer) for this very German beer that is true to its style. With a predominately grassy flavor, Love Street also has other notes of grapefruit, orange, lemon and coriander. It won’t overpower your palette and is well-carbonated. Dry, crisp and clean, Love Street is easy to like. We suggest throwing it in the cooler when you float the river on a hot day or have a cold one while grabbing dinner on an outdoor patio.

Thanks to Karbach for making killer brews and even cooler cans! We’re loving Love Street, and we hear the monthly tasting events at Del Papa distribution centers might feature a Karbach sampling very soon. Check back on the blog and on our Facebook page for more details!
